It Started With Hello

At the beginning of every relationship, there is an initial conversation-starter. Usually, it starts with, "hello." Back in 2008, my "hello" may have just been, "Hey, does anyone have 75 cents?" But, it's still a greeting that I'll never forget.
I was a freshman in college, hanging out where I normally did each night in my dorm, the downstairs lobby. I was surrounded by friends I had recently made, food, homework (that we were totally not doing) and all our laptops.
A tall boy with some crazy hair approached us all and asked if any of us had 75 cents. He was finishing up his laundry in our dorm laundry mat and didn't have enough for his last dryer. I recognized him. He and a friend had been asking for bone marrow sign-ups at the football game. He was really goofy!
I never had my wallet downstairs, as a way to forbid myself from buying sodas in the vending machines, and if I did, it would normally only have my debit and ID cards. I never carried cash or change. Weirdly enough, that night, I had 3 quarters. No more. No less. Just the three he needed.
He said a quick thanks and walked away with my three quarters, heading back to the laundry room. About ten feet away, he stopped, turned around and said, "I guess I should ask your name!"
"It's, 'Savannah!'"
"Okay. Thank you, Savannah."
That tall boy, of course is my husband.
That's how our friendship began. We started recognizing each other in the lobby, the bus and the cafeteria. After a while, we began inviting one another to any event we were going to. Some time later, I asked for his phone number across a few tables in the cafeteria and he quoted Lil' Wayne saying, "9-1-1. Emergency only," before giving me the real digits.
Those three quarters started the late-night walks around Victory Hall, the stressful evenings getting my class schedules ready, the breakfast meetings in Champs Cafe and the kiss that began our love story.
