Stormy May

While it may be the gloomiest month that I remember ever having and it's so easy to complain about the constant rain on a day-to-day basis, I do want to bring attention to some of the true harsh consequences that this May Texas weather has had on so many cities across our state.

Towards the beginning of the month, a strong tornado hit the small city of Van, near my hometown of Hawkins. Lives were taken and so many homes were destroyed. I see so much of Hawkins in Van. When you're from a small East Texas town, it's like you're on the same team in times like these.

When I was able to visit Van not too long after the storm hit, I saw a town filled with kindness, compassion and hope. To give some perspective; The group I was with (from nearby cities) volunteered time sorting donations and we were served a hot meal by local Van community members to thank us. Truly humbling.

While Van continues its recover, the weather has not let up for all of us. We're getting so much rain here in Texas that 36 counties are now officially considered in a State of Disaster. Recently in the floods near San Marcos my good friend Susana's parent's home was heavily impacted. They're going to have to replace all furniture, appliances, clothes and linens. Thankfully, only materials items. Her family was able to escape the home just in time.
