Although I'd been to New York before, I had never met Lady Liberty. Last week, when Crystal and I got up and ready to go, it was such a drizzly, dreary morning! It wasn't the type of day you want to do the whole Ellis Island experience, that's for sure. It was more like, where-is-my-umbrella, cover-my-camera kind of day. Luckily, my friends know the super-secret-freebie-local way to see Lady Liberty!

Crystal and I took the subway to the Staten Island Ferry port, where we waited a bit and boarded with hundreds of other people...for free. We sat on the right side and had a front-row view of the statue, once we were nearby.

Again, it was such a foggy day, but I was so happy to have the chance to see her for the first time. What a symbol of pride she is for so many!

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!'"
